Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM)
Simultaneous Localization And Mapping is a process implemented with unmanned vehicles to autonomously generate a map of an unknown environment and track its own position at the same time. The following video shows a SLAM of a 3-story building using the AscTec Pelican. Possible real life applications could be for example search and rescue or reconnaissance missions in contaminated areas.
Example implementation of SLAM algorithms from GRASP Lab (University of Pennsylvania). More videos on that topic can be found at our YouTube channel.
UAV configuration similar to the equipment used in the video:
- Standard AscTec Pelican system
- Hokuyo laser scanner with 30m range
- CMOS camera
- Atom processor board for on-board computing of the visual data
- Large propeller protection
