On Saturday the 23rd of March 2013, right at the beginning of the „Earth Hour“, 30 quadrocopter equipped with LEDs took-off in order to form the "Star Trek" logo while flying. Right next to the Tower Bridge in London and about 130 m above the ground, the AscTec Hummingbird quadrocopters promoted the new Paramount Pictures movie "Star Trek - Into Darkness", which starts in theatres in May 2013. The world-famous "Star Trek Starfleet" insignia was visible all over London.
Paramount Pictures partnered up with ARS Electronica and us to make this unique event happen. The very first Twitter messages start spreading during the flight show.
After the AscTec Hummingbirds had landed the worldwide media attention was tremendous: The CNET author had "to admire the stunt", although not a "Trekkie" and even the DailyMail (among the largest (online) newspapers of the world) was amazed:
„Now THAT'S a star sign: How did London's night sky come to be lit up with Star Trek symbol?“
